Moving to Tokyo in June where to live

Which area to live in Tokyo?

Hey all,

Will be moving to Japan June 3rd and debating between these areas as places to live for short term housing from employer. Wondering which do people recommend: Tokyo housing · Michael K

The locations are in sangenjaya, Shinjuku, Harajuku, and yoyogi uehera.

I’d prefer to be somewhere close to a park to get green space and do some running so was thinking harajuku might make the most sense but I also see a lot of hate for that neighborhood.

  2. In terms of a more peaceful, but connected loving I’d go for yoyogi, the parks great and even when Tokyo is disgustingly busy it’s still large enough you aren’t getting boxes in every few seconds.

Harajuku is pretty busy. I’d personally go for Shinjuku just because you will probably want to change train lines there all the time anyway, but yoyogi is only one stop away so probably just as convenient if you are more than a few minutes from the station.

  3. These are typical areas for foreign tourism (sangenjaya less so), so I’m not sure how you researched but I would really suggest you look a bit better or you risk choosing the ‘best areas to visit’ as ‘best areas to live in’.

Personally, living in Shinjuku and Harajuku would be a personal hell. But I know people who do and enjoy it. Out of these three sangenjaya would be my pick if I didn’t have to commute to my job.

Since you didn’t state where you work, what type of commute you wish to have, what you like to do outside work, what vibes you like etc. it’s hard for the community to offer targeted advice.

  4. This is off-topic, but why does every single reasonable, completely normal post in this subreddit get downvoted into oblivion? Like why even peruse the subreddit if people are going to get angry for utilizing the subreddit for its purpose?

  5. I have lived in Minami Azabu next to the Germany embassy during the 3 years I have spent as a resident in Tokyo.

For my personal taste the area was a bit too quiet. If I would live there again, I would look for something a bit busier like the Aoyama area.
