Phone / Google Voice question

Hello!

My wife (who is Japanese) and I are living in the US but are now buying a condo in Yokohama and will be there 3 months out of the year (two months summer and one month winter) for the future.

I am curious about whether we need a Japanese phone number for bills, bank accounts etc, and how to deal with that. Right now we both have iPhones with T-mobile service in the US.

Already she has received call backs for certain services. It seems it would be easier to have a Japan number we can provide for certain situations.

I’ve searched this sub and found mention of Google Voice. Is that something I should do? It seems like there are other services to have a Japanese phone number that forwards automatically to our US number but they cost $20+ per month?

I’m wondering how other people deal with this who travel back and forth. Having two phones — one for Japan and one for the US — seems less than ideal (but that is how we handled it 15 years ago). TIA!
