How to best order a 2 day Hakone trip when based in Gora?

Hey all, arriving to our accom in Gora mid morning from Tokyo (romance car then local pickup). The accomodation is close to one of the cable car stations (and 15 min walk from Gora station). We have half of the first day there, then a full day the next. We’re keen to get a glimpse of Fuji, visit the lake and open air museum, plus keen to walk some serene paths. Could anyone familiar with the area recommend the best approach to ordering these locations / activities?

I’ve heard best time to get a view is early morning or late so I was planning to do the cable car first thing on the second day, but not quite sure what to attack on the first afternoon… Thankyou!

  1. You could do the Open Air museum the first day. And do the loop the 2nd day and go on the cable car, ropeway, pirate ship (across the lake) and bus back. The ropeway is like a ski gondola whereas the cablecar is a train but it is on a steep incline. I feel you will have a better chance of seeing Mt Fuji from the ropeway.

  2. Please check out the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum. Very nice and the grounds are very serene as well.

  3. There are nice iteneraries on YouTube, you can check out those and see what interests you. My recommendation is to bath as much as possible, be it in the ryokan you booked or in a public bath if you opted for a hotel without a private/public onsen. When we were in Hakone for 2 days we visited the Hakone Shrine with Heiwa no Torii, then went across the lake with the pirate ship then went to Owakudani station with the ropeway. We were lucky and the skies were clear so the view of Mt. Fuji was awesome from there. Then we hopped on the ropeway again and visited Gora, then went back to Hakone by train. It was exhausting to do all this in one day (and also we were tired from the 2 weeks we’ve been visiting Japan already) so we just soaked in the bath in our ryokan the next day almost all day, and oh boy it was great. Just relaxing in the onsen and slowing down a little bit gave as lot of energy for the rest of our trip.
