Honestly How bad is May for curly hair?

I’m pretty sure I’m screwed and will be in buns, hair clips, and hats, but I thought I’d ask, in case anyone has successfully done this, if any curlies, wavies, or coilies had any luck straightening or flat ironing (whichever term preferred) their hair and keeping it that way on their trip? I’ll be going for the first time for two weeks in the middle of May, and I’m trying to set realistic expectations for myself on what’s possible hair-wise. Even with any humidity, I might still straighten it so my hair looks a little better in the buns.

From my own limited experience, professional keratin treatment (years ago now) and amino acid products very recently (Odele) don’t work for me. Sadly, I have fine, low-porosity hair, largely type 4 hair. I typically blow-dry and flat-iron it.

My hair is crappy(absolutely not because its mostly type 4, it’s just a combination of things that don’t make for fabulous hair when combined), whether it is straight or curly, relaxed or natural, like it is now; it doesn’t matter; I am just one of those people who have crappy hair no matter the texture, style or the money I put into it. I’ve accepted that, and it makes me appreciate the lovely features I do have much more. *Edited*

So any luck in May with your hair, guys? My husband and I will be in the Kanto region, but we would also like to explore the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions if possible.

Thanks so much in advance for any tips, US travel-sized products, or domestic (Japan) hair styling tools or products and where to find them!
Also, has anyone seen a Revlon or Conair-style blow dryer paddle brush in Japan? I plan on stopping at a bic camera (suggested in an older post) for a straightener unless there’s somewhere better to go for one instead.

I’ve been holding off on asking this question as hair can be a very sensitive subject. So please be kind to each other in the comments.
