I’m a Canadian working for a US company’s division in Canada, but will be transferring to their division in Japan.
I am thinking of keeping my investments untouched (unregistered account, TFSA, RRSP), as my occasional bonuses should cover my needs while I’m in Japan. I would invest the money coming from bonuses in whatever is akin to what I have in Canada, in Japan, and if I occasionally needed cash beyond my pay I’d sell some of those investments. I won’t have any other financial attachments to Canada, I’m trying to keep my financial situation as simple as possible for now.
If I ever needed to move money to Japan, from my unregistered account in Canada, is there anything to take into account in particular? I’d have to declare capital gains in my Canadian tax report I guess, and then there might be some form(s) to not get double taxed?
I’m guessing I’ll be in Japan for at least two years, and if I like it maybe more (I resumed learning the language).
I have no intention of buying a home in the first year, I’ll rent a room in a shared house for at least the first six months, then we’ll see.
Anything else I should be mindful of regarding my situation?
Thank you for your time
