Looking for a Tokyo city pop bar

Specifically, with city pop hits from the ’80s. Figure, some Ohtaki Eiichi, Yamashita Tatsuro, and Ohashi Junko, along with their colleagues.

More and more, I’ve been listening to this stuff on the typically delayed Chuo lines heading west. Wouldn’t mind having a social *chuuhai* to go along with it.

Any neighborhood really works, but I suppose those along the Chuo sen would get the edge.

Cheers.

  1. lol this question comes up so often here and in r/TokyoTravel, and tourists are always shocked to learn that there is no ‘city pop bar’! There are record bars that play golden oldies that may include some city pop artists, but they lean towards the more popular and well-remembered kayokyoku genre and ‘Showa pop’ in general.

Good news if you’re on the Chuo Line though – the closest thing to the city pop bar everyone pictures is [Bar OPK in Nishi-Ogikubo](https://maps.app.goo.gl/jVJpuwrBrpZxYAtMA), which has the look, the decorations, and the DJ kit, although the owner is keen to stress that they are not exclusively a city pop bar and have a variety of music nights. But even on a night featuring another genre, at least you can look up at Mariya Takeuchi’s face hanging on the wall.

Someone could make so much money if they opened a tourist-oriented city pop bar in Shibuya or Shinjuku…

  2. Offin in Ryogoku. The owner has all those albums. Get there early, ask, and he will probobly play some for you.
