Internet question

[SOLVED] Solution at the bottom

Hi guys,

I am at a loss as to what to do to connect my wifi router to the internet in my apartment in Japan, and hope someone can help.

(I would have preferred posting this question in /r/japanlife , but I have been banned and muted by mods for “not being a resident” even though I am, so this is my last resource!)

The apartment I just moved into is in Kanagawa.

I subscribed to an NTT Hikari 1Gbps contract with Asahi net as a provider.

I received the modem, plugged it in, connected it to my Macbook through the included ethernet cable, followed the [Asahi setup guide for lan connection](https://asahi-net.jp/en/support/guide/os/pppoe_mac_ventura.html), tested the line, great it works.

But I need wifi so I bought a wifi router compatible with Asahi net’s ipv6 protocol (“V6 connect”) [thanks to a helpful redditor](https://old.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/1btsg9q/what_wifi_router_to_get/). (Buffalo WSR-1500AX2S)

I plugged in the wifi router, connected it to the modem with the lan cable… but I don’t know how to make it work.

A [reddit thread I found](https://old.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/15de0sm/asahi_net_buffalo_router_setup/) just says “You should be using the ipv6 version of asahi-net (v6 connect) where you don’t need any username/password. Just login to the router, enable v6 connect.”

I connected to the router interface successfully but can’t find the correct setting in the fully japanese interface.

Can anyone help me with that? Maybe it can help future redditors in this situation as well.

Thanks a bunch!

PS: I didn’t try calling Asahi or ntt because they explicitely told me when I subscribed that they didn’t provide any installation support for wifi routers (even if I had bought it from them at 14k yen!).

EDIT: after 8 hours of struggle, everything works! Huge thanks to everyone who helped.

The gist of it is: YOU NEED TO ACTIVATE DS-LITE IN YOUR ASAHI ACCOUNT. There’s a big blue button to do that, but nothing in the doc or communication from Asahi informed me of that (before making this thread I scanned all instructions with google translate). Would have had zero problem if I had done it from the start.

Once it’s done, just make sure you’ve checked ‘V6 connect’ in the router settings, and wait (took around 1 hour for me).

Because it was taking all this time, I gave in and decided to call Asahi just in case even though they had said they couldn’t help with router setting. I started refreshing pages while waiting for an operator and of course, just as a guy picked up, a page suddenly loaded: it worked. So basically we just spoke confirm and that was it!

  2. I can’t help you with your problem, but maybe someone over at r/japanresidents can?

  3. Theoretically you should just set it to V6 and it should pick up your account and give you access. Just to make sure you are not connecting BOTH routers? just the Buffalo?

Which browser are you using? Try installing a translation extensions (ex. google translate) and have it translate the router setting screen for you and see if you can find the option that way. Or if you can get that to work just use the phone app and point the camera at your screen to translate.

  4. I haven’t seen one in person, but here are some things to try, by looking at a manual I found online:

    1. Make sure that the cable from your modem is plugged into the bottom ethernet port of the router.

    2. There’s a small switch at the back of your router, near the top. Make sure that it’s in ROUTER mode, not AP or WB.

    3. If you can connect to the router interface, go to http://86886.jp/set/ which should bring you to the Internet access settings and you can see what’s going on/why it can’t connect. You can always put in your username and password that you did in your Macbook and connect the old-fashioned way.

  5. If you do live here, try appealing your ban. Sometimes they ban people who do live here. I am not condoning the practice, just offering a suggestion since people there would know way more about this. (I don’t use Asahi Net, sorry!!)
