Could anyone explain to me how Japanese universities are less rigorous than American ones?

If you go on google and look at reddit posts related to going to university in Japan, you’ll find countless people telling people not to do it, that it’s basically a 4 year vacation and it’s only good for getting hired by Japanese companies, the educational standards are too low, etc.

I currently go to a Japanese university in a humanities program fully in English, and I’ve never went to an American university before. The workload in my school is something like one to three 1000-2500 word essay per a 2 credit course, a bunch of smaller extra assignments, like quizzes, smaller writing homework, presentations (a ton of presentations) and so on. I can provide more details, if you’d like.

Is this workload considered small in an American university? Or is the workload similar, but the evaluation is lax in Japanese universities?

I’m considering doing a Master’s in America, so any perspective on this would be a big help. Thanks!
