I’ve seen it used in multiple ways. I learned it through trying to brush up my kanji with Wanikani. Not a word I ever used. It’s definition is shown as all the following:
“Handicraft, Crafts, Maneuvering, Construction, Manoeuvering, Concocting, Operations, Activities, Handiwork, Crafting”
One of the example sentences is the following:
先生は、夕べはバーにいたというアリバイ工作をしたのだ。
Would this be a natural usage of the word?
The other two example sentences are more on the arts and “crafts” spectrum:
わたし、工作が下手なんです。
父は工作キットでキッチンを丸ごとつくった。
Even in English it’s not wrong to say “I crafted an alibi”, but it does not sound natural in most situations. Unless you’re trying to be very particular about the effort you put into the alibi you came up with, this wouldn’t be the right word. Just wondering is this the same in Japanese or is it perfectly natural to use it in this manner? Does it have some hidden meaning/connotation in Japanese?
