Hi all!
I’m messaging a girl I met on a dating app, and she keeps using ^^ these characters in conversation. Does this signify something? Is it similar to how I (an American) would use X) or 🙂 or ^_^ ? Any help is appreciated!!
*Edit
She has used emojis in our conversations so at first I didn’t think it was that. Could it be some weird translation bug?
Also I just want to add, I don’t know much about Japanese culture or norms and am just wanting to understand!

Why don’t you ask her?
I’d assume it’s just ^^?
I’m pretty sure two carats ^^^ are supposed to be a smile, like two closed eyes 😊
Just came to add my favorite (the calm face)

People have used faces like ^^ or ^_^ or ^.^ for a looong time, even before “emojis” as we know them today were a thing. They were (and probably still are) very common faces to use in online games like WoW, or in oldschool texting.
Also, if you can type Japanese, all you have to do is type かおもじ (“kaomoji,” literally “face letters”) and you’ll get a LONG list of faces like this: (´∀`)ノ \(^o^)/ (´・ω・`)
