I’m looking for Japanese movies about success, luxurious lifestyles and careers. Some equivalent to yuppie culture but in Japan, the office and flats aesthethics of American Psycho or The Wolf of Wall Street. I’d go for some retro movies as well.
I just feel like I’d really enjoy any movie about it for some reason.
Thanks in advance everyone!

The 1980’s is a unique decade in Japanese history. It’s known as the “bubble era” when Japan’s economy and stock market was booming. So much that people thought that Japan’s economy would overtake the United States. The bubble popped in the early 90’s and Japan’s economy hasn’t been the same since
I’ve heard many crazy stories from Japanese people reminiscing about the 1980’s
To answer your question, [a comedy film from 2007 called “Bubble Fiction” is one of the films you’re looking for](https://youtu.be/I5nYoVGmnKs?si=bmNBt4YA7XQEp0jn)
It’s a satire of the excess that Japanese people spent in the 1980’s
Summary of the film from IMDb:
>When a brilliant researcher accidentally turns an ordinary washing machine into a time-machine, the Japanese government convinces her to travel back to 1990 and prevent the announcement of landmark fiscal policy that triggered the nation’s economic demise
[華麗なる一族 *Karei-naru Ichizoku*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karei-naru_Ichizoku) is probably the most quintessential such story.
I had tried looking for this sort of thing somewhat recently, but kept finding that the most modern depictions of the 80s, that were populer in Japan, were American movies lol. (Not that it needs to be 80s, but that’s just the most luxurious time haha)
It seems like Japanese cinema hadn’t really caught up in a lot of ways, so lots of the most popular movies during the 80s were samurai movies, movies about the struggles previous generations had, the war, or high school.
Someone else mentioned it, but *私をスキーに連れてって* was also going to be my recommendation. It’s luxurious in the sense that it’s a bunch of young people enjoying skiing, then very popular and very expensive, and the latest gadgets.
I find that the 90s and 2000s have much better modern depictions of fashion and trends than the 80s did. If you’re able to pick up fashion magazine from the 80s though, they’re amazing. Also, TV commericals. There’s a bunch on youtube.
But now I’ve fallen back down the rabbit hole so I’ll keep looking lol.
