This article doesn’t give any information though other than this man and 2 others suing for being stopped. It’s very scant info..
> Maurice Shelton had only lived in Japan for a few months when he had an ugly encounter..
> Over the next decade, Mr Shelton said he was stopped again and again.
I mean.. if it was such “an ugly encounter” and “It reminded him of being “harassed in America for being a black man, just existing,” yet he continued to live in Japan for another decade whilst saying it kept happening over and over again.
for foreineger living in a japan
You can ask a police officer for his/her police identification book, take a copy of it, and sue the police to the Public Safety Commission for racial discrimination based on the name written in the book.
i pass as japanese and i’ve also been randomly stopped by police in tokyo. shrug.

Also Japan you still have time, don’t be like us or Canada or Sweden or Rest of Europe
Everyone calm down wtf. Japan is not your magical “anti-woke” land.
For the first time it’s a post about someone I have interacted with in the past .
At least they have a court system that actually has to deal with this in Japan.
Sadly in China, the same thing happens to black foreigners, and it will never be on the news or acknowledged or dealt with. The only way to get around it is to pay a red packet to make the problem go away.
Many overstays are discovered from street interrogations. The fact is that many foreigners overstay.
So, we have no choice.
You know if you’re not a twat to the police, and infact are courteous and friendly, they are highly unlikely to make your life hard. Especially if you’re charming and can speak the language.
Lol, cops truly are cops everywhere and should be treated as such
All I’m gonna say is that I got stopped in Japan more times in one month than I’ve been stopped in America my entire lifetime. My barber in Roppongi was from Ghana and he was stopped at the same train station TWICE A DAY! I remember sharing my experiences with white friends and they were completely surprised because they were stopped way less frequently. It’s a problem, period and I wish folks would stop making excuses for Japanese police and stop making it seem like this should be normal behavior to disproportionately target black foreigners or just outright denying it happens. It happens. A lot.
You know an article isn’t worth reading when it starts with unrelated nonsense like this “As Japan faces a population crisis that more foreigners could solve”. Immigration doesn’t solve anything, it only pushes back the inevitable.
At one point, every country will have sub-replacement level birth rates. At that point, what do you do? Import people from other planets? The reality is that there are no real long-term solutions other than increasing your country’s birth rates through fiscal measures and cultural shifts. Furthermore, immigration tends to drive productivity down, which is hardly something Japan needs right now.
Japan is for the Japanese. Everyone else can get the hell out.
