Just got back from a magical 2-week adventure in Japan, and I wanted to share a different perspective for fellow travelers! While many recommend the unbeatable public transport, I went for a rental car (outside Tokyo) and it completely transformed my trip.
Here’s the deal, public transport is awesome, but renting a car opened doors to off-the-beaten-path gems. Imagine cruising scenic mountain roads, stopping in charming villages, and creating your own Japan itinerary. Sure, it requires a little confidence driving on the opposite side (for experienced drivers comfortable with new situations), but the freedom is incredible!
Many say renting a car is expensive, but for groups of 3+, it can be cheaper than bullet trains & IC cards! Even for two people, the cost is comparable. Plus, parking in Japan is way more affordable than you might think (just watch for day/night rates, most hotels can guide you).
For Tokyo i used public transport to navigate around the bustling city and saved the day trips for when i had a car.
