Rail Travel Over Public Holidays

Hey gang! So I’m trying to travel North from Tokyo around the start of May, which is when there is like a week-long public holiday. Will I run into trouble? So far I’ve been looking at Google Maps and it seems to think there are trains available but as I’m going to rural areas I’m a bit concerned.

My plan is to leave Tokyo on 30th April and travel to Kawaji-Yumoto, Nikko. I want to spend one night here in a ryokan, and then continue on North-ish, towards Sapporo, probably stopping once or twice more over that first week of May.\*

In the UK, public holidays mean public transport goes out the window, especially in rural areas, but I don’t know if this is the case in Japan as I haven’t been before. I have been trying to look up the timetables but I’m struggling to find the most up-to-date info, and as I don’t speak (or read) Japanese I’m just finding the websites quite confusing to navigate.

Thanks in advance! x

\*side note – I’m heading North because I desperately want to try and see some blossom, and I know I’m coming a bit late! Any top tips on where to go would be majorly appreciated 🙂
