Hey everyone. I work part time as a preschool teacher. I went to work on Friday and discussed renewing my contract for the following year with the principal. He was really enthusiastic and asked if I could even extend my shift to which I replied positively and he said he’ll let me know on Monday.
On Monday I went to work as usual, worked hard, and left for my lunch break. I took out my phone and saw that the principal texted me saying that sorry he couldn’t come to work today and since there’s not enough students for next semester, I won’t be able to work for a while. I renewed my contract anyway for the occasional shift and I tried my best to finish my shift that day and go home, not to return for the unforeseeable future.
I don’t really care about the money that much since I have another source of income, but it was just confusing to learn it was my last day on the spot and I don’t really blame them because it makes sense to lay off part timers you don’t need. However, as I mentioned, the principal was really enthusiastic on Friday and suddenly realized that there’s an abundance of staff on Monday. If he let me know a few days in advance, I could at least emotionally prepare and say goodbye. All the other teachers were also confused and sad to learn that it was my last day and things were about to get a bit emotional so I just quickly had to leave so that I wouldn’t get emotional on the spot.
To be fair my workplace was really accommodating and flexible and I really liked working with the people there. I really liked the kids and the staff and it was too overwhelming to be let go on a normal working day.
I couldn’t really complain but it did feel a bit unfair and rude considering all the effort I put. At first I was wondering if I did something wrong or behaved in a way that I shouldn’t have but all the other teachers were confused and shocked so I think the problem wasn’t with me but that the school just didn’t need more teachers.
I just really needed to talk about this so I decided to post this here.
