Hey all! I’m going to be studying in Kyoto for a semester and am an avid birder, so am looking for some nice places in/around Kyoto that might be good for birding. Any suggestions?
Wherever there is less an infestation of those filthy verminous feral cats will be better than where they are. Try Takara-ga-ike Kouen and the whole eastern Kitayama area. There’s a neat bog pond thing just west of Takara-ga-ike, straight north of Kitayama Station. Also, from Shugakuin heading east up the river beside Shugakuin Imperial Villa towards the foot of Mt. Hieyama could be good. There is a funky riverside park there, where the birdies might roost and coo. If you go above the floodbuster dam there’s monkeys too!
Around the confluence of the Kamo and Takano rivers could be a good spot – there are often birds of prey and herons.
