Questions about emergency alerts while studying abroad

Hi, I’m very excited to be studying abroad this Summer in Japan with Waseda Summer Session.

With living in the country for 8 weeks, I want to make sure I’m informed of any emergency alerts, like earthquakes.

I’ve done some research on apps like NERV but still have a few questions. I’m not sure if these apps are even necessary if the government sends emergency alerts too.

* Will I still receive government mandated alerts even if I’m only using Pocket Wifi and not sim/data?

* Will government mandated alerts bypass the do not disturb on my phone?

This might be an unreasonable fear: I’m concerned on getting information I need in a timely manner without an app waking me up at 3am with a flash countdown for a tiny magnitude 2 earthquake.

* How can I still get information and avoid situations like this?

* What app should I use and which settings?
