I don’t understand what train passes to buy? Do I have to?

Hey y’all,

So I’m planning my on visiting Japan in October. I’m doing some preliminary planning and I’m a bit confused by all the passes… I would appreciate any help as I plan this trip!

Land on Oct 5th in Haneda airport, which train would I take to go into the heart of Tokyo? Should I buy a pass at the airport? Is that a thing? Any thing I should FERSURE get while I’m there.

Should I buy a certain pass to get around the train in Tokyo since I plan on staying there for 5 days?

On the 11th I’m hoping to take a train from Tokyo to Nagoya first thing in the morning and spending the day there then hopping on a train to Kyoto later in the night and staying there for the next few days.

On the 15th and 16th, I plan on taking a train from Kyoto to Osaka back and forth, should I buy a pass? If so, which one?

And then on the 17th, I take the train back to Tokyo from Kyoto.

Then take a train on the 18th to the airport.

Of course while I’m there I’ll be depending on public transit to get me around the cities, so any help on that end would help me too!

I keep hearing about the JR pass but it seems insanely expensive now, but if I just have to buy that one pass and be able to do all of the above without worrying about anything else and get around Tokyo no problem… then I’ll be happy to buy it for the convenience but yall let me know! Will I be buying multiple passes? Individual tickets? I’m just a bit confused with all this! Any help is appreciated!
