My wife and I are moving to Japan.

Any advice helps
I will work remotely for my company for the foreseeable future making about $2300 a month (gross). She will be working in building her small art business. Any day now my visa should be approved and I should be departing USA in November. We are torn between living in Osaka or in Tokyo somewhere (she lived there previously before getting married). We want to be close to artistic communities, afford rent supplemented by our savings for a bit and be able to connect with foreigners in order to build our professional connections and make interesting friends.
(She is Japanese btw)
I’m looking for advice on where to live FIRST with these goals in mind.

  1. So you’ve already decided to move without even deciding where you’d like to live? Sounds a bit rushed to me.

But with your goals in mind, I’d go with Osaka.

  2. Keepin’ it real.

Don’t use savings to pay for rent. Pay for what you can afford, and if things improve, then move later.

That being said, on that salary, you can’t be too picky on your location.

  3. Damn thats a rough one. Are you looking to bank on the art business? If so maybe Tokyo is the way to go. If expenses are tight.. than Osaka area.

I would think that being in Japan, it might be wise to build connection among Japanese people as well, as the foreign / expat community is amazingly small.

I would echo what others said and suggest Osaka, though Tokyo may be more welcoming to more niche things. What sort of art does your wife do?

  5. Honestly, the cat is probably going to be the most difficult part of the whole equation. I’m still trying to get my little dudes over here.

The hardest part has been getting vaccine records. When you get your rabies booster shots, GET THE PAPERWORK ON THE SPOT. If you leave the vet’s office without proof of vaccination, you will never see those records, ever. I’m now on my *third* 100-day cycle, and probably going to have to start over from the beginning because the paperwork my second vet gave me turned out to be proof of payment, not a proof-of-vaccination.

  6. The cat is going to limit your options. You should probably take a look at suumo to get an idea of what is available given your circumstances.
