Hello,
I am seeking recommendations for a Zeirishi and or lawyer in Japan who is experienced in handling cross border inheritance-related matters. I would also consider engaging larger firms such as PWC or KPMG if they are appropriate for my needs. If you have had positive experiences with any professionals in this field, I would really appreciate your insights.
To provide some background, I am a dual citizen of Japan and Australia, though I have resided in Australia for the majority of the past 22 years, there was a brief 2 year period of employment in Tokyo, about six years ago and I underhand this is a critical issue to have held a Jusho/address in Japan within the past 10 years.
My father, an Australian who lived in Japan for over 35 years, recently passed away in Australia, leaving his estate to me. He had relinquished his permanent residency and returned to Australia 14 years prior to his passing.
While I intended to renounce my Japanese citizenship, it is suspected this decision may be too late to affect the tax implications following my father’s death, as inheritance tax considerations are typically based on the date of the deceased’s passing.
I am also curious about the extent of the Japanese authorities’ power and jurisdiction over international citizens, particularly in cases where the individual no longer resides in Japan. Information on this topic seems vastly scarce, and I am trying to understand the potential legal obligations under the changes (and beyond) to the tax laws implemented in 2017.
For reference, I have consulted the following articles, which suggest that I may be fully liable under the new regulations:

Appreciate any input.
Cheers
