Definitely not. There’s a ton to do in Tokyo, and even more if you take day trips to nearby areas (Yokohama, Kawasaki, Nikko, Kawagoe, Kamakura/Enoshima, Chiba, Saitama, etc.). Even if you don’t feel like staying in the city for some of the days, it’s easy to go somewhere nearby to explore. I’ve spent probably months as a tourist in Tokyo at this point, and I haven’t run out of things to do.

Aside from the day trips I listed above, you could also consider an overnight to a popular onsen town like Hakone, Kawaguchiko, Kusatsu Onsen, etc.

We have [a wiki page](https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/wiki/faqs/lodging/) about this, but basically anywhere near a train station on a major line would be fine.
What did you do last time? Where did you stay? What kind of things do you like? What time of year are you planning to go?
Depending on your interests, you can either get away with less than six days in Tokyo or spend a month there and still have stuff left over to do.
You can take a day trip to see Mt. Fuji. You can check out Yokohama or any number of cities within an hour of Tokyo.
How much time is good for a city really depend on what you want to do, but really not difficult to spend 6 days in Tokyo.
Depend on your interest, there is dozen of possibilities. Apart from the answer you already have, Chichibu/Nagatoro, Izu peninsula. And if you wan to split it with a different regions, then there is a ton of options.
Close to the action, you mean you want to be in nightlife area so you do not have to worry about returning home after las train (around midnight) ? In that case Shinjuku/Shibuya, but otherwise, a lot of places close to train and subways stations can be great places to stay with super easy access to about anywhere you could want to go.
Lots of new things to see in Tokyo that can easily take your 6 days. Shibuya Sky, TeamLabs, Azabudai Hills, Kabukicho Tower, etc. Really, this is all based on your interest. Are you a foodie?, are you into new Tokyo? Cultural? Gardens?
The remainder, can easily venture to Kanazawa area for perhaps that old world vibe… try out a Ryokan, or easily hop on a plane for Okinawa. The world is your oyster.
