Driving license for car rental

Hi all, we were planning to rent a car for a few days while in Japan (renting from Atami and using to drive around the Izu peninsula) but due to reasons that are too boring to get into, my husband’s International Driving Licence won’t arrive on time for us to use it.

I wanted to understand if there is another way to drive legally in Japan as tourists? And what happens if you drive just with your country’s driving license? I know it’s not legal but curious to what extent this is policed as surprisingly the rental company were chilled about it when we got in touch to let them know about the situation. Aren’t people normally stopped by policemen on the roads? I also thought the rental company itself simply won’t give you a car unless you show IDL but maybe they don’t care?

Any experiences would be super useful, we leave in 2 days and getting very stressed about this!

Thanks!
