Should we do Kurobe Gorge when the trains don’t go to the Keyakidaira?

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend and I are going to the Hokuriku area in May and staying in the Kanazawa. We were planning on doing a day trip to Kurobe Gorge, however, one of the railroad bridges has been damaged. Now, the train only runs to Nekomata Station and from what I can tell, there’s no other way to reach Keyakidaira.

Is Kurobe Gorge still worth the trip? We both like nature, walking and onsen, so we are considering doing the round-trip to Nekomata and then go back and look around Unazuki. Maybe we could do a day-trip to an onsen or perhaps walk up to the peace statue. But we would have really liked to explore the Keyakidaira area.

If we don’t go to the gorge we would go cycling around the Toyama area or spend another day in Kanazawa.

If anyone has been to Kurobe Gorge, I would love to hear what you think. Is Kurobe Gorge still worth it even if you can’t walk around Keyakidaira?

Thanks!

  1. I’ve been there. It’s a great day trip. Most of the hiking path was closed off because of flood damage. But the area around the gorge is all open.

  2. The area around Unazuki is pretty nice to walk around and if you like trains, the train ride is pretty fun. However, its pretty long day trip from Kanazawa so unless that’s what you’re really interested in, it may be worth skipping for now. I would highly recommend Keyakidaira during the autumn color season.

Depending on how many days you’re staying in Kanazawa, you could also head around to the Kaga area or go to Toyama or even Shirakawa instead.

  3. The train ride is still beautiful but I don’t think so tbh, there’s nothing at Nekomata. It’s a pretty long day trip from Kanazawa and I think there’s nicer places you could go that are nearby.

Toyama is really nice for cycling and hiking in general though!

  4. I wouldn’t go, with that many people in a small area it’s going to be crowded. Go to the kurobe alpine route instead

  5. Where is Toyama area were you planning to cycle as a day trip? I’ll be on those areas later this year, fishing around for ideas.

  6. I’ll be doing the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in July! I think that would be a more than adequate alternative to the train.

I imagine the hotels within the route are already booked up, but if you’re staying in Kanazawa, you could still do a day trip all the way to Kurobe Dam through Toyama and Tateyama.

Though if you’re going in May, you’ll probably want to reserve your tickets soon.
