Does anyone have experience living in Japan long-term (5-10+ years) without gaining permanent residency?

Hi there! I was wondering if anyone has experience with continuously renewing temporary visas for work, studying, etc. without actually becoming a permanent resident? If you continue to qualify for the temporary visas, is there any issue?
