Tutorial – How to watch anime with Japanese subtitles legally

Edit: Yes, it’s unfortunately still bit of grey area

I’m making this post to hopefully help someone, since the process is actually stupidly simple. Many tutorials involve pirating anime episodes, but with this process you can use official streams.

Step 1) Download chrome extension “asbplayer”

Step 2)

Download subtitles file from kitsunekko.

Step 3)

Open that anime from Crunchyroll etc.

Step 4)

Press Ctrl+Shift+F and select the subtitles file. You can easily customize the appearance of the subtitles with the asbplayer menu.

Optional step 5)

Download Yomitan extension and add some libraries to it. Now you have easy to use dictionary. You can even connect it to anki to make flashcards, but I won’t go into more detail to keep the post brief. Asbplayer actually also has Anki integration but I found it easier to just use Yomitan instead. For card use Livakivis for example or modify it to your liking.
