I obviously mean within the standard Tokyo dialect; know it’s standard in the Kansai dialect. For instance, in a television series, a character says “*誰にも渡さねえ。*” which the subtitles translated as “*I won’t let anyone have you.*”. Personally, I would’ve chosen something more akin to “*I ain’t gonna give you to anyone else.*”. To me at least “渡さねえ” sounds very coarse, more coarse than even simply using “gonna” and more on the level of “ain’t” in how it doesn’t even seem to appear anywhere in Japanese forum posts or I.R.C. channels much but since translators often translated it essentially identically to “渡さない” I’m not too sure of it.

So gruff that my 5 year old daughter does it all the time.
Hololive’s Okayu contracts ない to ねえ without coming off as particularly gruff or masc.
Much like how Japanese swear words… say… ふざけない can run the gambit between “Stop fucking around!” and “quit messing around!” it’s going to change gruffness depending on the tone and inflection used.
