Notebooks back to front too?

Hi quick question! I know books tend to be back to front, is this the case for how notebooks and journals are used in Japan too? Thanks!

  1. Depends if the lines are horizontal or vertical. If it’s lined horizontally, you’d use it exactly how you would a western notebook. This style is the most dominant notebook style in modern Japan.

If it’s lined vertically, you’d write vertically from right to left. This is a very niche thing these days, I think. For notebooks like this, the spine would be on the [right side of the cover](https://images.app.goo.gl/RyhGxwcizfcHuTN86). Compare with a [normal notebook](https://images.app.goo.gl/EdApkJbpRVUBV2Qd9) from the same brand.

  2. Hi. A foreigner who has studied a year in a Japanese high school and currently in the second year of a Japanese university here. The special notebooks might have been used in subjects like 国語 but for everything else we use the standard lined notebook with ruled horizontal lines. Usually writing in the left to write direction. Most kids use loose leaf sheets which they later put into a binder/folder. But now almost everyone just brings an iPad.
