Do japanese universities keep your name for school records as the original or written in katakana?

As it says in the title. Since international students can’t get a kanji name or anything of the sort (legal alias), do they keep the student records as letters from the english alphabet or katakana? This pertains to school documents.

  1. Mine kept my name in English alphabet for all school accounts and documents so far. The name used will often be as it is written on your passport, which is then what is written on your residence card. Might depend on the Japanese university though.
