Moving to Japan (Yokohama) in a couple of months, what are some things I need to know before my move?

I have just been offered a mid senior level management role with a start-up in Yokohama and I am expected to move there in the next couple of months. I have been offered ¥ 8M per annum plus some benefits like ¥25K per month for my commute, health insurance etc.

1. Is ¥ 8M p.a. a good enough salary to move to a city like Yokohama? I live economically and would like to rent out a decent studio. However, I have struggled to take out time to cook my own meals in the past, and hence have always resorted to dining out or takeaways.

2. Do I ask the company for any other benefits? I believe they will work out my visa. But am I expected to foot the flight ticket cost and initial accomodation? Or is it reasonable to ask them to arrange for it?

3. Is Yokohama expat friendly? How is the English speaking community in the city? I know 3 languages and I do intend to pick up Japanese over time.

4. How do I go about finding an accommodation before my move there? Websites, Facebook groups?

5. How do I go about socializing once I get there? Popular spots to meet other expats and Japanese folks?

6. What are some great neighborhoods in Yokohama and what places should I avoid?

7. Common scams to be wary of? Places not to visit?

8. General things to remember/etiquettes.

  1. 1. ¥8m is plenty for a single person (assuming), and enough for a couple.

    3. Yes. It’s one of the more progressive cities around, however, don’t feel like you can get by without any Japanese. The country primarily speaks Japanese and most people don’t speak English.

    4. You’ll need to go through an agency. Craigslist rentals are not really a thing here.

    5. Like any other place. You have to get out of your comfort zone and go to Meetups, bars, hobbyist events, etc.

    6. Aoba-ku, Tsuzuki-ku, Midori-ku are a few good places.

    7. Don’t follow anyone anywhere. People might pretend to want to be your friend but often they’re trying to get you to join their cult.
