There is a monitoring station right in the centre of that blob which [reported exceptionally high PM10 earlier today](https://aqicn.org/city/japan/okinawashi/okinawa/). However, all other measurements (including PM2.5) are normal, and there are no unusual measurements in any of the surrounding stations. We can be quite confident that this isn’t something that was blown in from elsewhere since (1) this would have been detected at other sites, and (2) nothing appears in forecast models. This measurement was therefore either caused by something very local (e.g. a fire or lots of dust near the station), or it’s an error. The fact that there was no increase in PM2.5 makes me suspect it’s an error, but I don’t know for sure. Regardless, this map was likely generated by interpolating data between stations, so it makes it look like a much worse and bigger event than it actually was (if it was even anything to begin with).
Regardless, levels are back to normal now. Okinawa is OK!
Air quality went📉
It makes so much sense why it’s so hot today
This has happened somewhat frequently over the past year since I’ve been monitoring. It’s concerning, to say the least.

Google maps 3d view. What large buildings are in the middle? My guess would be a garbage burning building or factory.
