Greetings at the end of the day

During orientation it was stressed how important greeting culture is in the Japanese workplace, especially when leaving. We were told to say “o saki ni shitsurei shimasu” to the whole teacher’s room before going home. My PA even encouraged us to say it to the teachers sitting around us first, then to say it to the VP and the 教務先生 (Vice-Vice Principal..?), then say it AGAIN while facing the whole room before going out.

So I tried that and it seemed like no one actually gave a sh\*t lol

Especially at my base school, which is huge and has like 70 teachers, I’ll usually just get a grunt or be straight up ignored by everyone except for the teachers near me.

I know some other ALTs just straight up leave. My mom says the Japanese way would be to just keep greeting everyone regardless of how they react but idk I feel like I’m bothering them and it makes me kind of self conscious!

How do you guys say byeeee at your schools?

Edit: Thank you guys for your answers! I guess I’ll just keep greeting everyone the way I’ve been doing it and hope it’s appreciated!
