Finding a Job in Civil Engineering as an Immigrant

Hi all,

I know similar questions have been asked in the past but was hoping to get some input from someone with more recent experience moving to Japan as a civil Engineer. Feel like there’s more flexibility in the workspace now for remote work and whatnot so I welcome some updated opinions/info.

I did my bachelors and Masters degrees, both in Civil Engineering, in Irish Universities. I believe Irish 3rd level education is typically held in fairly high regard globally, especially in engineering. Will have my professional certification/charter by the time I’m moving over.

My work experience is 5+ years, about 1 year each in Ireland and USA (Massachusetts), and 3+ years in Vancouver Canada. I’ve worked mostly in Civil Design of subdivisions, residential developments, schools, and a lot of work in Parks and Recreation, including sports field and spray/splash pad design.

Everything I see online discusses how tough it can be to break into specifically Civil Engineering and Construction in Japan.. But I haven’t been able to find much in the way of people who have the experience of having done it, or know someone who has.

Any insights, thought, advice would be greatly appreciated. I know wages aren’t fantastic, but that’s an issue for another day.

I’m currently learning Japanese but I’m in the early stages. Hoping to give myself 18 months or so to learn more before moving out there with my partner who is from Tokyo.

Thank you in advance!
