About amazons return policies

Dear japanlife community,
it happened to be, that I want to refund an item, that I bought on amazon, for the first time.
The item in question is a phone.
What scares me are the return policies for “opened and used items” where you only get 50% of the original price refunded.
I can’t really draw a line between an opened and used item and a new item in this case. And this one here I think is important: To make sure that an electric device works properly after arrival I have to open it and start it, right? In my case that was briefly loading it, checking camera, sound, connection etc.
After that, I reset the phone, cleaned the display from any fingerprints from tapping, and returned it into its box with all things as they were before. Does it count as used and opened now? The box did not have a seal. Even putting the phone back in the small plastic wrap (although the corners of the plastic bag are slightly damaged which could not be avoided when taking the phone out. I now fear they easily say after inspections that they cant sell it as new anymore. I do a return for the first time ever and I also know that amazon japan might handle it differently than other countries. I of course want to cooperate with the seller and be as transparent as possible, however I also hope it gets evaluated fairly. Does anyone have experiences with amazon refunds?

with kind regards,
