3 Days where to base – Nikko/Lake Chuzenji/Kinugawa

Hello friends,

My partner, 4 year old and myself will be on a multi week trip to Japan starting in late October. Once we leave Tokyo (on Halloween) we’re heading to Nikko for 3 days and will be renting a car at Nikko Station for this leg of the trip. My question is on which area to stay in (Nikko proper, Lake Chuzenji or Kinugawa)? Our tentative plans are:

Day 1: Pick up our rental car and check out the Shinkyo Bridge/shrine area and if up for it walk around Nikko)

Day 2: Lake Chuzenji (Kegon Waterfall, walk around lake area, boat if possible, and check out Senjogahara Grassy Plain). All of this subject to how the little one is doing.

Day 3: Check out Ryuokyo Gorge for a short hike, Edo Wonderland

One note is that we will be staying at Ryokans/Onsen towns a few other times during our trip so it’s not an essential/critical decision for where we stay while in the area, though we have been looking at some in each of these three areas. I imagine the food options are limited at night here so the Ryokans may be a good choice?

Given the tentative plans and that we have a car, where would you suggest lodging? As I see it, Nikko would be the most central, the Lake area would be good as we have the most stuff planned there and can get an early start, up river (Kinugawa area) would be nice for the Onsen experience.

Thanks all!
