What is the point of the gachapons for locals?

I don’t understand how those things are so popular with locals in particular. There is only so much keychains you can put in your bag or bracelet, and the toys clutter a lot once you get a few gachapons over the span of months. Even more so to the fact that many japanese apartments are particularly tiny.

Do locals just have a dedicated junk drawer they dump their gachapons in? Or do they do something I don’t know of with them like trade them for goods from a third party or something?

I would assume once people buy a few, they stop buying it altogether, but apparently those shops dedicated to only them are very profitable and I don’t understand how it is reliable income.
