Hi everyone, I moved to Japan last year and I’m confused about taxes and how much I will be paying this year. Currently, I am only having 10% taken from my check and not paying much for health and pension since it was the first year. But I’ve been told that once city tax hits this year I’ll be losing 30% of my check which ends up being around 87,000. That amount doesn’t include health insurance and pension, I’m an independent contractor so I pay for these on my own, which I am guessing will be around 20-30k?
That ends up being a deduction of around 100,000 each month which just feels insane in comparison to what I’m making. I make 290,000 a month, is that a normal deduction amount or am I making a mistake somewhere? I’ve seen threads here of others mentioning they lose around 60,000 to taxes and I’m wondering why mine is so much higher, is this due to the fact that they are on shakai hoken? Does being an independent contractor make the tax amount higher?
Edit: I work full-time for an eikaiwa but I’m on an independent contract. Wondering now if I screwed myself over with this
