I am just now closing on a slightly over 1000sqm square of inaka in Oita. I’ve been working with the fudosan gathering information on confirming things like the location of the city water supply, location of septic drain field exit, etc. This has started some conversations between the local “district leader” and also the neighboring rice field owner. Some of these conversations have lead to requests which I’m a bit taken back by and not sure of how / if to respond to.
Examples:
The septic drainage is designed to flow into this street duct, but would you mind running a longer pipe down the road so your water exits downstream from my rice field water supply?
There was previously a two story house on the very northern edge of your property and it blocked some sunlight on my rice field. If you build, one story is okay, but could you please not butt a 2 story house up to the edge of the property line as was previously built there?
How the hell do people have the gall to ask these things?
I’m still just in early planning phases about what I want to build and where on the land I want to do so, but one of the main reasons I bought the property was because it’s outside of city planning, has no coverage ratio or height restrictions and generally I can do whatever the heck I want.
I’ve already discussed with my wife about the complete wide range of available responses to these types of things, from complete lack of consideration and response (I wouldn’t change course of action to be malicious with building plans, since that’s just a waste of my own energy and money) to the opposite end where you try to play nice and join their committees, socialize, share cookies and are overly apologetic about how the house that was torn down before you even bought the land was so difficult for them to deal with for so long. My god. So sorry about all of that….
So my question to reddit land owners. What are some crazy requests you’ve had, how did you respond and what have the consequences been?
My wife tells me stories about neighbors illegally dumping and generally being shitty to newcomers to an area. Frequently calling police for trivial complaints, etc.
Any horror stories?
Right now, I’m leaning towards an acknowledging response, but not agreement.
Yes our initial plan for the land is a two+ story house built up against the north property line.
