Using my Phone

So I’m gonna be moving to Japan in about a year for about six months and I don’t know what to do about my phone since this is what I primarily use to accept calls to do my job.
I know T-Mobile offers a plan Magenta but I’m currently on AT&T and I prefer not to spend about $50 a week of my money to accept calls. ( I will if necessary )
I was wondering if anybody anybody knows about the Wi-Fi calling and how that works? Do I need to be in the same country; can I be in a different country and still accept calls from the US specifically from call center type numbers.

  2. I would not recommend it as a reliable solution long-term, however for a 6-month stay you should be fine using something like Google Voice where you can port your current number from your carrier to Google, then use wifi calling same as you would normal calling. I use it for 2FA, calls to family and friends, companies, etc. and it works well. There are other options besides Google Voice but I personally found it to be the easiest and most intuitive (also cheapest, just $20 to port my number and no fees after that).
