Ok, so I’m trying to understand the various parts of a sentence, and need a little help.
“Excuse me, do you live in Kyoto?”
“Sumimasen, Kyouto ni sundeimasu ka”
My question is: is the “do you” part of the sentence simply implied in the Japanese translation? If I’m not mistaken, “sundeimasu”
means “lives, to live”, “sumimasen” is “excuse me” and Kyouto is obvious. The “ka” indicates that the sentence is a question. So where does the “do you” come in? Or, like I said, is it simply implied?
And if it is implied, is there a part of the sentence that identifies that? Or is it because when you’re asking this question of someone, it’s obvious who you mean?
