Okinawa: how to the most of a few days, with a focus on nature?

Hi !

I was wondering if I could pick some brains about a few days in Okinawa at the end of June. (I’m aware june is rainy season, I’m hoping to mitigate that by going near the end of the month.)

Here is the thing: I’m thinking of avoiding the main island, or at least not making it the focal point of our itinerary. I’m sure there are many interesting things there, but I’m hoping to get more out of the trip by going to other, more remote Islands that seem to have more “highly-rated” natural must-dos. My wife and I are very much into nature more than civilization, buildings, museums. We enjoy those as well, but spending 1 or 2 days learning about the local culture would be enough, then beaches, hiking, snorkeling, is what we imagine for our perfect okinawan activités.

However, I’m kind of stuck: we obviously can’t go to ALL the best-known remote islands in just a few days, so I’m not sure what I should be aiming for. Looking at all the guides online, FOMO is hitting hard!

I’ll add that, we’re on a budget: I would aim for a ‘backpacker’ budget, with occasional splurges for 1 or 2 nights in a beach-side hotel for instance (splurge for me = around 15K yen a night for a double room lol).

So… should we land in Naha, spend 2 nights there tops, then take a ferry to the Keramas?

But maybe I could make it a shorter trip with the same expense, for a more exceptional experience, by taking a plane directly to Miyako Island?

Or should I even aim straight for Yaeyama islands?

It’s very hard to pick and choose between all those just by reading articles. And google results for a “one-week itinerary in Okinawa” mainly focus on the main island…

Any insight is very welcome!
