Hair Dye for a Dark Blonde in Japan?

So, I’m an expat living in the Kansai area…

I am in desperate need of a change. I really want to dye my hair dark (dark brown or even black). My natural hair is dark blonde (and a thin straight texture). I’ve never gotten more than a haircut here in Japan because my hair did weird things even in my home country so I’m always hesitant to go to a stylist… but there’s no way I’m dyeing my hair at home.

Does anyone with blonde hair have experience with Japanese hair dyes? Do they hold well in blonde hair? Does anyone have any Salon recommendations in the Kansai (Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo) area?

  1. You can get imports of the brand schwarzkopf hair colour around Namba but I can’t remember the name of the store/chain I went to the one time unfortunately. Have a look around the ココカラファインshops, they have decent hair products

  2. Many Japanese salons use the same hair dyes used in the west. Tity salon near Namba uses Wella I believe. If you look for English speaking salons you’ll pay a premium but be reassured that they have experience in western hair.

Also, yes you should go to a salon- many people wreck their hair with box dye and once it’s in it’s harder to dye well even at a salon (especially with dark colours)

  3. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, K Studio New York in Umeda is excellent. It’s run by a Japanese couple who owned a salon in New York for 20 years.

It’s a bit more expensive but they really know their stuff. There’s no chance they’ll mess something up haha, their technical knowledge is incredible. Ask for Keiko (the wife). She’s so great, and you can contact them via instagram message 🙂
