Dotonbori overrated?

We’ve had kind of a mixed experience in Dotonbori so far and I was curious if other ppl felt similarly or if we maybe just got unlucky.

Our first day here, we got some takoyaki, sushi, and gyoza. All of it was pretty good, though not “Osaka is the food capital of the world” good.

Our second day, we started with a yakiniku place that was actually bad, like I would actively tell people to avoid it. I got a taiyaki which was solid but not as good as one I got earlier at Kuromon Ichiba. We checked out the Final Fantasy cafe but it seemed pretty low effort lol.

We were kind of not feeling Dotonbori at this point, so we decided to just walk away until we stopped seeing tourists, then eat whatever looked good. We ended up ~20 mins away in some quiet residential area, and finally had some really amazing food (katsu curry).

So overall, karaoke, the arcade, and just in general walking around have been fun. But I’m kind of getting the feeling that Dotonbori is like “Japan the amusement park” – cool to walk around, lots of entertainment, but pretty touristy and kind of a shallow imitation of The Real Thing.

What do other folks think?
