How to correctly say one’s nationality?

I’ve been learning Japanese for about 2 weeks now, using Duolingo only.

My understanding is that to say “I am Mexican” I can say “watashi wa Mekishikojin desu”, but Google Translator corrects it by using “Mekishiko hitodesu”, however if I listen to the pronunciation, the voice says the first one (Mekishikojin desu). Which one is correct?

Also, some exercises translate “Mekishikojin desu” as “I am Mexican”, but Google Translator doesn’t understand it without “watashi wa”, is it correct to just say “Mekishikojin desu”? Does it depend on the conversation context?
