I work in the real estate sector, primarily tasked with photographing properties for 360º virtual tours, particularly for projects involving multiple residential buildings. Each time, I receive a list of vacant units to visit. It’s common for these units to be unlocked. One day, in Osaka, while conducting my visits as usual, I approached a unit on the list. I knocked, as I usually do, just in case, and there was no response. So I opened the door, only to be greeted by a shocking sight: a naked man seated on a chair. My brain froze for a moment as I also noticed a camera on a tripod nearby, suggesting something more concerning. Next to him, partially obscured by a blanket, appeared to be a woman. In a panic, I quickly shut the door. To my surprise, it reopeneda few seconds later, and the man inquired about my presence. He was still naked, and undisturbable! Assuming I had made a mistake, I apologized and attempted to explain, but his response, in what sounded like deep Kansai-Ben, left me baffled. He then closed the door without any hostility.
Taking a moment to compose myself, I double-checked the list; indeed, this unit was supposed to be vacant. I promptly contacted my colleagues overseeing the project, who shared my surprise. They reached out to the property manager, who confirmed the unit’s vacancy. However, no further action was taken by my company. While I wasn’t traumatized, I couldn’t shake off the discomfort and surprise. As a 33-year-old man, I’ve seen some other dudes in public baths. But what if it had been one of my younger female coworkers stumbling upon such a scene? The lack of response from my company left me with numerous unanswered questions. Who was the naked man? What was his purpose, considering the camera setup? How did he gain access to the unit, given the building’s secured entry? Should I escalate this issue internally?
