Kyoto to Osaka Day Trip – best way to get there?

We are staying in Kyoto (first time in Japan) – Nagakyo Ward (I believe) a few blocks from Nishiki Market, and looks like 10 mins from Karasuma Station.

We plan to take a day trip to Osaka and would like to start the visit at Osaka Castle.
This trip will be on a Monday and we’d like to get there about 10AM.

I wondering what if there are recommended routes – I’ve been reading that Shinkansen isn’t ideal.
There are lots of options on Google maps but seem to have a lot of transfers.
Google maps doesn’t suggest getting a cab to another station or anything like that, so I’d love to know if it’d be worth it getting a cab to a different station…or if it doesn’t really matter and that I wouldn’t be saving much time.

Should we worry about booking in advance?

It’d also be good to know if this timing would be nuts as far as trains being packed due to people commuting to work. We could probably manage to push things back an hour if that would allow for a less crowded ride. (we won’t have luggage, just small backpacks.)
