Legalities of copyrighted material for educational purposes?

Does anyone know of the legal wiggle room (if any) for using copyrighted material (novels/stories) for reading purposes in class?

I’m using ChatGPT to convert stories to CEFR A1/A2 material for reading assignments for my students.

So far I’ve only used public domain material. But I’m also wondering what if I ask ChatGPT to condense say Harry Potter?
