Thoughts on the TV series Shogun and how much that times culture remains today

This is a bit left field but I was watching the recently concluded Shogun tv show while flying back during GW and couldn’t enjoy even the first episode because of a visceral reaction to one scene.

This is literally in the first 15 min of the show so not a spoiler but a random character talks out of turn to defend his lord and the gets told to shut up. He then grovels and states he will commit seppuku and also condemn his male bloodline (just had a son) to death for his rudeness. My eyes rolled to Neptune and back.

I pretty much stopped watching a few scenes later when he demands his wife handover his son and she would rather die than do so.

My partner suggested that the scene irritates me because I live here now and feel seppuku culture when it comes to excessive politeness and apologies lingers in Japanese despite being non productive and stupid (from a modern, liberal western perspective).

Maybe Im overreacting and I cant quite put my finger on my issue here but wondering how anyone else feels about both the show and seppuku mindset.
