Current Kansai resident here. I’m wondering if anyone has had experience or knows of someone who has transitioned from an ALT/instructor job to another form of employment in Japan.
In my situation, I’ve realized that working full-time as an ALT/instructor isn’t for me, but I am ideally wanting to stay 6 to 12 months longer in Japan if I can after my current work contract ends in August 2024. My residence card is valid until August 2026; however, my status is listed as “instructor”.
My burning question is: if I were to accept a job in a different field of work (e.g. hospitality), would I need to apply to change my status on my residence card? If that’s the case, to keep things simple, should I try to find a part-time instructor position to maintain my “instructor” status per my residence card? I do enjoy teaching, but my current contract was not the right fit.
