Hello, I hope someone can help me out with this. I’m getting a root canal done, possibly tomorrow, unless I back out. I go to a dentist in Tokyo that I think is more expensive than other dentists. He doesn’t do the dragging you along with lots of appointments so I figured that is why. I need to get a root canal and he said offered the one that’s not covered by insurance that uses special cement called MTA cement that apparently is antibacterial and should make it less likely of infection recurring. The cost will be ¥100,000 for one tooth. The regular one would cost 20-30k. The thing that worried me is that he said the one covered by insurance has a 50-60% chance of success. Is he bullshitting me to make me choose the expensive one? Thanks in advance for your help.
Edit – I don’t know if these prices include a crown since he’s drilling a hole in the metal crown I already have on that tooth to do the root canal. I have no idea of how big this hole will be. I have an Invisalign retainer and he seems reluctant to mess with my tooth shape. Maybe he will set a new crown after but he didn’t mention that when he explained the process.
Update: I appreciate all of your comments so much! I decided to go with MTA since I thought it was worth it if there’s a chance my tooth might fare better in the future. He ended up removing the crown without discussing it (originally said he’d drill through) since I chose the expensive route (maybe) and I got the roots cleaned. Cement is next week since they’re busy. I asked about crown options and they said only can be done privately since I chose this option which they didn’t tell me before. Price for ceramic crown was quoted as ¥160,000. I’ll be going elsewhere for the crown me thinks
