More questions about the Japanese smartphones

I’ve seen many sim free smartphones and phones provided by carriers such as docomo, au, softbank and all those stuff. Now I actually want to clarify something about the differences between these 2 types of smartphones.
I know for a fact that carrier provided smartphones are SIM locked. But then again, there’s a feature when you can unlock the SIM, so it becomes SIM free.
Now the question is what is the difference between SIM-free smartphones and SIM-unlocked carrier provided smartphones OTHER than the bloatwares? (Like ntt docomo smartphones pre-installed with docomo services)
